So What is "Organic", Anyway?!

More and more we see the market being flooded with products labeled as "Organic". At first it gave me the "Warm fuzzies" and I said to myself: "It is about time"!

Then reality set in, my bubble was popped, as I remembered that in the society we live in, we should always "Follow the Money"... and you will without a doubt see a clearer picture.

I hate to sound so cynical but let me explain where I am coming from.

Organic farms have traditionally been small, family-run businesses supplying local markets. Under pressure by our "beloved" neighborhood Wal-Mart many multinational food corporations have developed "Organic versions" of their best selling brands.

So where does your money really go when you buy a name brand so called "Organic" snack?

I LOVE the apple juice from the company called Naked Juice, however it left a bad taste in my mouth when I discovered it has been owned by Pepsi since 2006!

The Boca brand is owned by Kraft
Cascadian Farms and Muir Glen are run by General Mills
Odwalla was acquired by Coca-Cola in 2001
Kashi was acquired by Kellog in 2000

Mass Market channels accounted 46% of all organic foods sold in the US in 2005.

So, do you REALLY think that the integrity of what you and I think as Organic is being kept by these large corporations, as they attempt to gain market share in the natural foods movement?

I thought "Organic" was 100% free of Genetic modification, Hormones, Antibiotics, Irradiation, Synthetic fertilizers and pesticide... Eco-friendly, which respects the integrity of the environment and workers and according to scriptures, every 6 years the soil should be allowed to rest for a year...

Reality Check:

Horizon Organic, supplier for Wal-Mart, has continually ignored federal organic standards as for example, a cow's access to pasture.

According to NewsTarget/NaturalNews April 2, 2007, I quote:

"To maximize profits, some of these companies don't follow organic standards but still label products as organic. For example, Horizon Organic and Aurora Organic, sold by Wal-Mart and other retailers, continue to produce "organic" milk under factory-farm conditions that few reasonable people would consider truly organic.

According to the Organic Consumers Association, half of Horizon's "organic" milk today comes from what can only be considered "factory" dairy feedlots..."

These cows are fed genetically modified foods, chicken manure and slaughterhouse waste... Not quite my definition of "Organic". Cows should be exclusively fed on grass.

If you read my other article, "My People Perish For Lack of Knowledge", where I mentioned Dr. Sebi and his electric cell food herbs, you know cows are hybrids anyway, so their meat and milk are acidic to us humans, and mucus forming. In my book, cows and their meat would not be given the Organic label under any circumstance.

As we can see, an "Organic" label does not always equate to a superior product.

In conclusion, in seeking food that is as close to what the Most High intended, you are far better off seeking local producers.

The following was taken from Dr. Mercola's website, mercola.com:

"A conventionally grown product carries a 4-digit PLU code (Ex: conventionally grown banana: 4011)
An organic product carries a 5-digit code, starting with the number 9: (Ex: organic banana: 94011)
A genetically engineered (GE or GMO) product has a 5-digit code, starting with the number 8: (Ex: GE banana: 84011)
Here are a few other fruits that are LOW in pesticide residue, and therefore good candidates to purchase as conventionally-grown, however, double-check to make sure you’re not buying a GMO variety.

Avocado – A new GMO avocado variety is scheduled to be introduced this year that is immune to “stress” and pests, per an Indian state report published in March, 2008.

Bananas – The first GMO banana with extra genes that increase its levels of pro-vitamin A and iron is being unleashed in Australian field trials this year. At Cornell University, researchers are also working to develop a banana that carries the hepatitis B vaccine.

Pineapple -- GMO pineapples, designed to produce greater levels of proteins, vitamins and sugars may already be on the market. Australia applied for pineapple into environment all the way back in 2002. The pineapple is called “Smooth Cayenne,” which has delayed flowering and herbicide resistance. It also contains the tobacco acetolactate synthase gene (suRB) from Nicotiana tabacum.

Kiwi -- The transgenic variety of kiwi fruit is the Actinidia deliciosa from Italy."

Great point of view and interesting way of presenting this issue.
I just ran across this article and thought you and all visitors would be interested in reading about our "revered" Whole Foods Market.... Marketing is something else isn't it... it has many believing what "they" want you to believe in...

I say: "Just Say Know" !!

:O)

Could not resist...

So What is?

Hey JustSayKnow!

No kidding! I have noticed Whole Foods is replacing many distributors products with their own 365 products and what upsets me, is that 365 products are at times of INFERIOR quality!!!

It has sugar or some other junk that the product it replaced did not contain...

They have investors to please and I guess money talks, right?

Thanks for sharing... I am not surprised but still upset!

Alas, you have burst my bubble (again!)
I am "in love" with Whole Foods Market! But isn't that how it always is...an illusion.
Well, I am willing to forgive IF they rectify the situation...

As a former/current Team Member/Trainer at WFM, I have "fought" with Team Members to preserve the integrity and core values upon which the market was founded. My glee for the expansion has turned into what I had anticipated - disappointment. When a company experiences rapid expansion, they tend to lose their "uniqueness" in favor of "cookie cutter" service/products/standards-what have you.

That being said, WFM might now be such a huge international conglomerate unable to turn back the hands of time in order to restore John Mackey's original goal/intent. (Or -- maybe his goal was always to eventually deceive the public and make massive amounts of money...actually, I do not believe he was that sinister in the 70s...however-money does speak very loudly and can corrupt even the most well-intentioned individuals. Anyway, it is not HIS company-so there are other people who may have the sinister intentions...anyway, I digress-sorry)

The issue of Organic is touchy because if a customer picks up a produce item and puts it back, it is no longer "organic." The sticky lables with the PLU number have adhesive and therefore compromises the organic integrity of the produce. So, really, nothing is organic. Might they be better than the produce sprayed with pesticides? In many cases yes-particularly on thin-skinned fruits, and leafy (and therefore exposed) veggies.

Those of us who read/believe the Bible know that in the last days, we shall eat poison and live. So, I say, bless the food and be grateful that we are not limited to rice, corn, mullet and yams as some folks are in less-developed countries. We live in & with abundance. Therefore we should appreciate what we have and do our best to take care of ourselves and our families. Nothing is perfect and what we have is better than what most people in this world have.

be grateful & be blessed. peace, judi

more info re organic vs pseudo-organic

Postby wimminrule on Tue Aug 05, 2008 1:22 pm

BREAKING NEWS & ALERT:
USDA REPORT INDICATES THAT ORGANIC LABELING FRAUD IS INCREASING
The U.S. Department of Agriculture National Organic Program (NOP) announced this week that 15 of the 30 accredited organic certifiers they recently inspected failed the USDA audit and will have 12 months to make corrections or lose their accreditation with the NOP. Although the USDA euphemistically calls their enforcement actions "renewal pending subsequent audit," it is clear that there are numerous violations of organic standards taking place in the U.S. and across the world. A number of the violations noted in the several hundred page audit related to Chinese imports certified by the French-based organic certifier Ecocert and other certifiers.

Strangely enough, Quality Assurance International (QAI), the largest organic certifier in the world, is not cited by the USDA, even though the OCA has recently reviewed documents that indicate that QAI is indeed under investigation by the NOP. QAI has recently been in the news for sourcing ginger, contaminated with a dangerous and banned pesticide, Aldicarb, from its Chinese certification sub-contractors and then labeling it as "USDA Organic." QAI is also under public fire, along with other certifiers, for certifying factory farm feedlot dairies supplying milk to Horizon and Aurora Organic Dairy, who in turn supply Wal-Mart, Costco, Safeway, and other organic private label organic milk.
